I applied for a blue badge only i week ago, It arrived in the post on Saturday, as i was not on the high rate DLA mobility, i had to send a cover letter from consultant explaining my difficulty when walking, which i did, i was so surprised to receive a reply so prompt, maybe Lutons not so bad after all lol.
I think if you are turned down send application with a letter from Rheumy consultant, surgeon or GP giving info on your mobility probs, keep trying, i used my badge today when my daughter took me shopping. parking close and having space to swing my foot into the car made my life just a little easier.
I was however very surprised at the leaflet which arrived with the badge for items relating to the badge ie holders,maps and sat nav, i found these items very pricey
i will be ordering the Atlas as you also receive a radar key, i am sure i will find this very useful as finding a toilet is a nightmare after a shopping jaunt when my feet are swollen and all i can manage is a slow shuffle the last thing i want is a queue. Not so bad at £ 12.99 inc p&p.

I have had my badge renewed a couple of times, and just need to show my DLA assesment to get it. The only worry is though if they remove my DLA will I be at least allowed to keep my badge?

i really feel for you guys with hard to get badges, i am on low dla and have newly got a blue badge i waited 6 weeks for it, i am in suffolk so could be the area, i was cheeky and kept my late husband radar key though it never cost us( was still in scotland then), never thought i'd actually need it, i have seen my gp and thanked him for the help getting a badge,he along with all my o/t have been great, keep at it,and give them a fly in the ear,keep us posted,girl power.

Hi. I was diagmosed with RA end Sept 2010. After joining this forum I decided to apply for a Blue Badge with Bristol City Council. Senot off my app about 10 days ago, and my badge arrived yesterday. After reading the problems some of you have I realise I am lucky to get mine Rosie Rosie

Birmingham City Council are famous for being completely inept and useless. I know, I used to work there.
The Blue Badge scheme is run by the Older People's Access Services which gives you an idea of the type of people they're likely to have assessing the forms - not staff familiar with a wide variety of disabilities, that's for sure. Here are their criteria:
"You will only qualify for a badge if you or the person on whose behalf you are applying:
* receives the higher rate of the mobility component of the Disability Living Allowance
* is severley sight impaired (Blind) or receives a War Pensioners' Mobility Supplement, or
* receives a War Pensioners' Mobility Supplement.
Some people may also be eligible if they are more than two years old and either:
* have a permanent and substantial disability which means they cannot walk, or which makes walking very difficult, or
* drive a motor vehicle regularly, have a severe disability in both arms, and are unable to operate all or some types of parking meter (or would find it very difficult to operate them)."
They don't ask for much, do they?
So imagine how I feel when I'm hobbling the 150 metres from the street where I've been forced to park my car due to me missing spaces at the train station (all gone by 7.40am) and I see people running from the disabled bays with laptops, shopping bags and the rest in hand to catch their train. Every last one of them has a disabled badge displayed. I wonder where I'm going wrong??????
